ExtraGang.com The gang at ExtraGang.com is pretty small: mostly, it's Dave Cole. A former newspaperman who started in computer technology in 1980, Cole has been building and hosting web sites since 1995. In 1995 the World Wide Web was still pretty new and Cole was one of the few people around the world who helped pioneer the use of Macintosh computers for not only web site development, but also web serving. He extended that commitment by establishing a full suite of Internet services — domain name services, file transfer protocol, mail server, list services — all based on Macs. Today, Cole leverages the Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X to host the full suite of Internet services on an array of inexpensive Macintosh computers (more technical information is here). Cole's commitment to clubs and non-profits extends back into the 1960s, with a one-year stint as yourth representative on the board of directors of his local American Red Cross chapter, followed by many hours of volunteer work, teaching swimming and water safety. In the 1970s, Cole helped found and operate a crisis telephone hotline for teens. Later that decade, he was the head of an all-volunteer quarterly magazine, coordinating the efforts of a crew ranging from grizzled, old-time newspapermen to students. In the 1980s Cole was the head of an association of newspaper technologists and used the then-latest technology to extablish a computerized bulletin board system to allow them to exchange important information and exchange computer code. In the 1990s, Cole took a seat on the board of directors of the Junior Statesman Foundation and later served as the unpaid chief technologist for the group. |
